Reflection:
The Collection Evaluation and Development Plan is evidence that I can create a well balanced collection that meets the needs of all students. Learning how to first analyze a current collection to help guide the development of a new collection was an eye opening experience. There is great detail that goes into developing a collection that meets the needs of the diverse learners today. I found that taking the extra time to research book vendors, viewing the material in person, discussing materials with other School Library Media Specialists, and most importantly asking the students what they want, is beneficial in creating a thorough collection. A School Media Specialist must be knowledgeable about the content standards throughout the grade levels, and should strive to maintain a collection that correlates to the curriculum.
The policy paper that I wrote on safety in the media center is evidence of my knowledge of effective use of the media center. A School Library Media Specialist must be able to develop policies that are the foundation for a media center that fosters the needs of all learners.
The Selection and Weeding Policy assignment gave me the opportunity to analyze a policy from another county. Through collaboration with peers, we took an existing policy and modified the policy focusing on intellectual freedom of the media center patrons. This was my first encounter with policies, and I feel that this assignment created a solid foundation for my understanding of policies.
I created a Glogster on presenting the 21st century standards to teachers. I believe that it is imperative for a School Library Media Specialist to express the importance of information literacy standards, and to educate classroom teachers on how they can be implemented in their instruction. The Glog is evidence of my knowledge of information literacy standards and their significance to the 21st century learner. This Glog is one example of how a School Library Media Specialist can help teachers develop new teaching strategies.
