Standard I: Use of Information & Ideas
School library media candidates encourage reading and lifelong learning by stimulating interests and fostering competencies in the effective use of ideas and information. They apply a variety of strategies to ensure access to resources and information in a variety of formats to all members of the learning community. Candidates promote efficient and ethical information-seeking behavior as part of the school library media program and its services.
Reflection:
The facility plan that I created shows my ability to create a learning environment that is suitable for 21st century students. This project allowed me to realize the importance of maximizing space and technology in today’s media center. I used action research and data to create an environment that would maximize not only student learning, but also the professional learning opportunities for faculty members. I feel as though I have created an environment that not only promotes reading for enjoyment, but also supports information seeking. The facility design indicates my ability to analyze a current media center facility, and use that information to make improvements that facilitate learning.
The digital video was created to encourage reading by promoting literature circles. The video is intended to inform 3rd-5th grade students about the components of a literature circle and the ways in which a literature circle can have a positive impact on reading fluency. A Diary of a Wimpy Kid book was used to engage the audience, and show them how the books that they are already reading can be used as part of a literature circle. Collaboration among my peers was used to create a video that would serve as a motivational tool to promote reading for enjoyment.
The "Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover" advocacy plan was designed to motivate students in grades K-5 to read different genres. The implementation of the advocacy plan will allow students to have more exposure to different genres of literature and be able to respond to literature in a variety of ways to demonstrate comprehension of the texts. The advocacy plan was developed using a variety of strategies including a reading interest survey to find student interests. In collaboration with peers, the advocacy plan was developed to allow students a variety of formats in which to get students enthusiastic about reading unfamiliar texts. Introducing students to new authors and genres will provide them with more opportunities to be exposed to literature.
I created a digital story to ensure that patrons of our media center are able to locate exactly what they are looking for. The digital video takes a detailed tour of the media center and also highlights the special features that we have to offer at BUES. The intention of this video is to make certain that all visitors to the media center should be able to easily locate resources and information.
